Stupid (but useful) iPhone tricks: The screen dump
July 14th, 2008 by scaredpoet

iPhone Home Screen

Some people like to illustrate a point they’re making about a piece of software, or show a particular problem they’re having, with a direct capture of what’s on the screen. The process of doing this is called a screen capture, or screen dump.

This is pretty easy to do in Windows and on a Mac, but it can be elusive to do on a cell phone.

Ever wonder how people can get perfect screenshots of their iPhone? Well, it’s actually quite simple:

This screen capture was taken from my old iPhone. All you have to do is the following:

1. Press and hold the Home Button down (the button below the screen).
2. Briefly press the Lock/Power button (the one on the top edge).

The screen should briefly fade, indicating a screen capture has been taken.

Then, just sync the phone to your computer, and the images can be imported like regular photos.

Not bad!

This might have worked before voice control. pressing the home button down triggers Voice Control with the 3GS.

Actually, I have done this on an iPhone 3GS and it works fine. The key is to not hold down the Home button longer than 2 seconds before hitting the Lock button. There is plenty of time to hit both buttons before Voice Control is triggered.

Alternately, you can hold down the lock button first and then hit the home button. Again, you have to do this faster than 2 seconds, or the phone will want to turn off.
