MySQL targeted by UDF-propagated worm
Jan 31st, 2005 by scaredpoet

If you’re using a MySQL installation on a Windows machine: beware. A worm is spreading via UDF that is targeting Windows machines with MySQL running.

The bulletin from MySQL AB, including and detection and removal instructions, can be found here.

Fortunately, detection and removal is very simple, though to prevent future infection, users will have to use firewall software or other configurations to ensure that port 3306 is blocked for now. Of course, such a measure will cause problems if you would like to manage the MySQL server remotely, or if your machine is a dedicated MySQL server that other web and application clients connect to. As long as your system runs the web server and MySQL locally, however, blocking port 3306 shouldn’t be a big deal.

Also, Unix and Linux installations of MySQL do not appear to be susceptible at this time.

Popcorn Fork: You KNOW you need it.
Jan 30th, 2005 by scaredpoet

Yes, someone has taken on the horrid social problem of buttery-finger syndrome and has developed a Popcorn Fork.

GUARANTEED A FUN AND PRACTICAL TOOL
It’s great for “real people” snacks like caramel
corn, cheese balls, corn chips, etc. A new
way to eat foods like pasta, sushi and oriental
salads. I’ll bet you can think of more!

Oh golly gee, I just bet!!

Though honestly, I think it more practical to pick up my “real people” snacks with my real fingers. Call me old fashioned.

“Smart Keys” have had their day.

keys

A team claims to have cracked the Immobilizer, a security system developed by Texas Instruments that uses imbedded chips in keys to authenticate before a car will start.

Oh, and yes, it is the same RFID technology that’s used in things such as the SpeedPass System:

Researchers said they were able to crack that code, too.

“We stole our own car, and we bought gas stealing from our own credit card,” said Avi Rubin, a professor of computer science at Johns Hopkins who led the research team.

Cingular_treo

Good news: For those who have been waiting for a GSM version of the Treo 650, it’s rumored for release next week, through Cingular Wireless.

Bad news: Like the Sprint version of this phone, the DUN profile (allowing someone to “tether,” or connect via bluetooth to this device with a computer and use it as a wireless data connection) is disabled.

Even worse news: Unlike the Sprint version of this phone, Cingular has been rumored to take extra steps to ensure that the DUN hack for the Treo 650 will not re-enable tethering.

How much does it cost to beg forgiveness?
Jan 27th, 2005 by scaredpoet

After flowers, phone calls and visits didn’t work, some poor schmuck who’s trying to make up with his estranged wife paid $17,000 to take out an ad in the local newspaper, begging for forgiveness.

“Please believe the words in my letter, they are true and from my heart,” read the ad in Tuesday’s edition of The Florida Times-Union. “I can only hope you will give me the chance to prove my unending love for you. Life without you is empty and meaningless.”

So let’s recap.

  • A Dozen roses: $49.99
  • Cell phone bill: $39.99 (if you’re cheap)
  • Advertisement in newspaper: $17,000
  • Mending a marriage? More than anyone can afford, it seems. 🙂
